A Life of Art and Medicine

Frank H. Netter was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1906. From an early age, he displayed an exceptional talent for sketching and painting. However, it was not until he enrolled at New York University School of Medicine that his passion for medicine ignited.

Balancing his demanding medical studies with his artistic pursuits, Netter developed a unique ability to merge the two disciplines. He found that drawing helped him to visualize and understand complex anatomical structures, and his illustrations soon became a valuable tool for his own learning.

Upon graduating from medical school in 1931, Netter began practicing surgery at New York Hospital. However, his love for art remained strong, and he continued to draw and paint in his spare time.

Birth of a Medical Masterpiece

In 1934, Netter was approached by CIBA Pharmaceutical Company to produce a series of anatomical illustrations for a medical textbook. This commission marked a pivotal moment in his career, as it allowed him to fully express his unique talents.

Netter spent years meticulously researching and studying the human body, ensuring that his illustrations were anatomically accurate and scientifically sound. He employed innovative techniques, such as the use of three-dimensional perspective and dynamic poses, to create images that were both visually stunning and immensely informative.
